Dysport is a type of botulinum toxin, the same substance that is used in the popular brand Botox. While botulinum toxin has a number of medical uses, it has also gained FDA approval use in minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures as a treatment to reduce and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin that works by blocking the transmission of signals from the brain to the muscle to prevent it from contracting when you make facial expressions. As a result, the overlying skin also can’t move with the muscle, preventing the formation of lines and wrinkles.
The process is minimally-invasive and painless thanks to the use of topical anesthetic ahead of the procedure. The toxin is injected into the muscle where it will start to work virtually immediately. It is typically used to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, known as the glabellar lines, and is injected into five key spots forming a ‘V’ shape. The entire process takes less than an hour including prep time and post-treatment aftercare instructions, and there is no downtime, meaning that patients can get back to their usual daily activities immediately following their appointment.
Dysport begins working immediately, but optimal results can usually be seen around three days following the treatment. Dysport may help to improve the appearance of the glabellar lines for up to five months before further treatment is required to sustain your results.
